Ontario Security Guard and Private Investigator Testing
To work as a security guard and/or private investigator in Ontario, you must have a valid licence. You can obtain a licence by passing a course from a training entity identified by the Ministry of the Solicitor General , showing proof of a clean criminal record, and successfully completing a 60-question exam.Book a Test Get Results
Security guard and private investigator tests take place at approximately 30 locations across the province.
Tests take 90 minutes and are offered in a paper-and-pencil, multiple-choice format.
Ontario Security Guard and Private Investigator Testing
In Ontario, any person who performs work, for remuneration, that consists primarily of guarding or patrolling for the purpose of protecting persons or property requires a security guard licence. This includes, but is not limited to, bodyguards, bouncers, and loss prevention personnel.
Private investigators are persons who perform work, for remuneration, that consists primarily of conducting investigations in order to provide information on the character or actions of a person, the business or occupation of a person, and the whereabouts of persons or property.
The Ministry of the Solicitor General regulates Ontario's private security industry with an aim to ensure work is carried out professionally, effectively, safely, and lawfully.
On behalf of the Ministry of the Solicitor General, Serco Canada Inc. administers security guard and/or private investigator tests at DriveTest Centres across the province. ServiceOntario then processes security guard and/or private security applications and issues security guard and private investigator licences to eligible applicants.
